PhD

Doctor of Philosophy (Theology)

University of Divinity, Melbourne, VIC, Australia

About this program

The Doctor of Philosophy (Theology) is the University of Divinity's highest research degree and, unlike the coursework-heavy Master of Divinity, it's almost entirely independent research: a substantial thesis supervised by a scholar drawn from one of the constituent colleges, examined externally in the standard Australian PhD model. Candidates work across the university's full theological range: biblical studies, systematic and historical theology, ethics, liturgical studies and practical theology, and supervision is matched to a candidate's specific research question rather than assigned by a single central department, since expertise is distributed across the college network.

What makes doctoral study here distinctive is the ecumenical breadth of supervisory expertise available under one doctoral framework: a candidate researching, say, Catholic sacramental theology and one researching Uniting Church ecclesiology can both be supervised and examined within the same PhD program, drawing on faculty across traditions the university has spent over a century bringing together.

Graduates go into academic theology, senior denominational leadership, and specialist research and teaching roles at seminaries and universities, both in Australia and internationally.
