Consistent with the Melbourne Model logic that pushed most professional training to graduate level, the Master of Engineering (Civil) is how Melbourne now delivers what used to be an undergraduate civil engineering degree: students typically arrive having done a Bachelor of Science or a broader engineering systems undergraduate degree first, then specialise here.
The Melbourne School of Engineering has particular research depth in geotechnical and structural engineering that traces back to long-standing relationships with major Victorian infrastructure projects: the West Gate Tunnel and Metro Tunnel projects, among others, have supplied case material and occasionally student placements over the years the projects have run. That gives the degree's design studios a distinctly Melbourne-infrastructure flavour compared to a program without that local pipeline.
Because the degree is graduate-entry, cohorts include a mix of straight-through Melbourne Model students and a genuine slice of international students who did an unrelated undergraduate engineering degree elsewhere and are using the Melbourne master's to specialise or requalify for the Australian market.
