About this program
Melbourne's Master of Computer Science is a graduate-entry conversion degree in the true sense. It's built for people who did a bachelor's in something else entirely (mathematics, engineering, occasionally a humanities degree with a strong quantitative streak) and want a legitimate route into software or research careers, which is a deliberate consequence of the Melbourne Model pushing most technical training to postgraduate level.
The School of Computing and Information Systems has real depth in a handful of areas that shape the elective menu: distributed systems and cloud computing, given Melbourne's history with the NeCTAR research cloud infrastructure, and a strong theoretical computer science group that feeds a healthy stream of students into PhD study rather than straight into industry. Students without a CS background start with a foundational stream covering programming, algorithms, and data structures before the degree opens up.
Because it sits inside a Group of Eight research university rather than a dedicated tech-focused school, the program leans slightly more academic than some industry-oriented master's degrees elsewhere. The project subjects are real but there's more emphasis on being able to reason about algorithmic complexity and formal specification than a bootcamp-adjacent program would demand.

- Foundational stream (for non-CS entrants): Programming and Software Development, Algorithms and Data Structures, Computer Systems
- Core (all students): Software Processes and Management, Distributed Systems, Database Systems, Elements of Data Processing
- Specialisation electives: Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Computer Graphics, or Programming Language Implementation
- Capstone: Project subject (research-oriented or industry-partnered) in final year
- Research-strand students may take an extended thesis component as an alternative to the standard project
Admissions
Bachelor's degree (AQF7) in a cognate discipline (Computer Science or equivalent) with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 75%, plus 25 points of university-level mathematics or statistics subjects.
