Master of Public Health

Melbourne's MPH runs through the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, and the "global" in the name isn't decorative: the school has a genuinely strong international health and development research profile, with academics who've done long stretches of field-based epidemiology and health systems work across South-East Asia and the Pacific, and that shows up in guest teaching and case material more than at a purely domestically-focused program.

Students pick from a specialisation set that includes epidemiology, health economics, and global health, and the epidemiology and biostatistics core is taught at a level that reflects Melbourne's research output in the area. This isn't a soft-touch overview sequence, and students without a strong quantitative background sometimes need a semester to adjust.

Melbourne's location next to the Doherty Institute and the broader Parkville research precinct means students doing infectious disease or health security-adjacent specialisations get exposure to researchers actively working the same problems, and during and after COVID this became one of the more visibly relevant features of the degree, with several MPH academics becoming familiar names in the state's public health response.
