Bachelor of Design

Melbourne's Bachelor of Design is delivered through the Melbourne School of Design, and its defining feature is that it's the shared entry point for what most other universities split into completely separate degrees: architecture, landscape architecture, construction management, property, and urban design all sit as majors inside this one undergraduate program before students specialise further at masters level, which is again the Melbourne Model logic: generalist first, professional specialisation second.

The school's building itself (the John Wardle and NADAAA-designed Melbourne School of Design building at Parkville) is a piece of contemporary Australian architecture in its own right and functions as a teaching tool. Studio spaces and material fabrication labs are built into the building's design, and students in the architecture-track majors spend a lot of contact hours physically in that building's design studios rather than in standard lecture theatres.

Because most students treat the Bachelor of Design as a pathway into Melbourne's Master of Architecture or a related graduate professional degree, the undergraduate program is explicitly not a professionally accredited architecture qualification on its own: that accreditation attaches to the graduate degree, which is a structural point that trips up some students expecting to be registration-eligible straight out of the bachelor's.
