UNE's nursing degree is built specifically around the New England region's healthcare workforce needs. Regional NSW and Queensland have chronic nursing shortages, and clinical placements run through Armidale Rural Referral Hospital and a spread of smaller regional and rural facilities across the New England and North West, giving students exposure to rural generalist nursing practice that's genuinely different from a metropolitan hospital placement rotation.

The degree has a strong online delivery component for theory content, with clinical placement blocks completed in students' home regions where possible, a deliberate design choice that lets students already living in rural or regional communities study without relocating to a capital city, and one that UNE leans into because it also serves as a pipeline back into the same underserved communities once students graduate.

Because rural nursing practice often demands broader generalist skills than a specialised metropolitan ward role, UNE's curriculum places real weight on primary health care and community nursing content earlier than some urban nursing degrees do, reflecting the reality that a New England graduate is statistically more likely to end up working in a small regional hospital or community health setting than a large tertiary trauma centre.
