About this program
UNE's Bachelor of Arts carries the university's founding identity more than almost any other program on this list. UNE was Australia's first university to offer external (distance) study back in the 1950s, and the BA remains the degree most associated with that mission: a large share of the cohort studies fully online, often as mature-age students balancing the degree with work, farming, or family responsibilities in regional NSW and beyond.
The major list covers the expected humanities and social science range (History, English, Politics, Sociology), and UNE's history department in particular has a research niche in Australian rural and regional history that shows up in elective offerings you wouldn't necessarily find at a metropolitan university's arts faculty. Local and family history methods units draw directly on that strength and on UNE's own regional archives.
Because so much of the cohort is part-time and juggling other commitments, the degree is structured to be genuinely flexible on pacing. Students can move through majors across a longer timeframe than a standard three-year full-time load without it functioning as an afterthought accommodation, since UNE's whole institutional model assumes non-standard study patterns rather than treating them as the exception.

- Year 1: introductory subjects across two chosen majors, Academic and Research Skills
- Year 2: major sequence subjects (choose from History, English, Politics, Sociology, Philosophy, Classics and Ancient History, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies)
- Year 3: advanced major electives, capstone research subject within primary major
- Delivered on-campus at Armidale or fully online, with flexible part-time pacing genuinely built into the structure
- Minor option available for students wanting a secondary area of study alongside their major
