Master of Education (Research)

UNE's Master of Education (Research) is a smaller, more specialised degree than its coursework Master of Education sibling. It's aimed squarely at practising teachers and education professionals wanting to build a genuine research track record, often as a stepping stone toward a PhD or an EdD, rather than a general professional-development credential.

Given UNE's decades of investment in distance and flexible education, a lot of the research topics that graduate from this program are actually about education itself in regional, rural, and remote contexts, such as rural teacher retention, the effectiveness of distance and blended learning models, and small-school pedagogy, areas where UNE's own institutional history gives supervisors direct expertise most education faculties elsewhere simply don't have.

The degree is thesis-heavy from early on, with less coursework padding than a taught master's, and students work closely with an individual supervisor for the bulk of the program. UNE's education research group is modest in size, which in practice means more direct supervisor access than a larger faculty with the same degree spread across many more research students.
