Bachelor of Business
University of Newcastle, Newcastle, NSW, Australia
About this program
The Newcastle Business School holds AACSB accreditation, which puts it in a smaller club of Australian business schools than the AQF-only crowd, and the Bachelor of Business leans on that with a first-year "business challenge" unit that has students working in cross-major teams on briefs set by local firms in the Hunter region, a lot of hospitality, mining services, and logistics companies rather than the finance-sector case studies that dominate at the Group of Eight schools.
Majors run from the standard accounting and marketing through to a sport business major that draws on Newcastle's genuine sporting culture (the Knights NRL club, Newcastle Jets) for placements and guest lectures, which is a distinctive offering most other regional business schools don't have. Students can also take a double major, and the degree has a well-used study-abroad exchange list skewed toward partner universities in Germany and the Netherlands, a legacy of the business school's earlier European exchange partnerships.
Class sizes in first year are large lecture-plus-tutorial format at Callaghan, but by third year most students are in seminar-sized major electives, and the degree includes an optional (unpaid but credit-bearing) 100-hour professional placement unit that many students use to lock in a graduate job before finishing.
