Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program)

The Joint Medical Program is run jointly with the University of New England, and it's the reason Newcastle's medical school gets cited in medical education literature well beyond Australia. It was one of the first programs in the country built entirely around problem-based learning, adapted from the McMaster model, rather than bolting PBL onto a traditional lecture-based curriculum. Students spend the first two preclinical years working in small PBL tutorial groups of eight to nine, using clinical case scenarios to drive their own learning of basic and clinical sciences rather than starting from anatomy and biochem lectures.

The five-year combined Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine structure means students exit with an accredited MD, and entry runs through UAC plus the UCAT (or GAMSAT for graduate-entry places) and an interview, with a meaningful chunk of places reserved for rural background and Indigenous applicants, reflecting the program's explicit rural workforce mission: a large share of clinical years are spent at rural and regional clinical schools in Tamworth, Port Macquarie, Taree, and other New England and mid-north-coast sites rather than concentrated in a single teaching hospital.

Because of that rural distribution model, students don't all have the same clinical experience: some spend years 3-5 largely in Newcastle at John Hunter Hospital, others are placed for extended rural terms. The university markets this as a strength (genuine rural medicine exposure), but prospective students should weigh it if they're set on a particular clinical environment.
