Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours)

UQ's vet school is the oldest and one of the most internationally recognised in Australia, holding accreditation from the Australasian, American (AVMA), European, and Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons bodies simultaneously, a rare combination that lets graduates practice in a wider range of countries without extra certification than most other vet degrees allow. Most of the clinical years happen at the Gatton campus, about an hour west of Brisbane, where UQ operates its own teaching hospital plus large-animal and equine facilities that give students hands-on experience with production animals most city-based programs can't offer at the same scale.

The six-year Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) folds a science-heavy first two years into increasingly clinical training, with extramural studies (externally supervised placements at private practices, zoos, and specialist referral hospitals) building up across the degree so students graduate with genuine caseload experience rather than only university clinic exposure. UQ's teaching hospital handles a real mixed caseload of companion animals, equine patients, and production animals, and students rotate through all three streams rather than specialising early.

Places are extremely competitive (among the hardest to gain entry to of any UQ program), and the honours research component in the final years gives students who want to go on to specialist veterinary residencies or research careers a genuine head start.
