About this program
UQ's Bachelor of Science is a broad, major-driven degree, and the range of majors on offer reflects some genuinely distinctive UQ research strengths: marine biology students get access to the Moreton Bay Research Station on Stradbroke Island for fieldwork, and students interested in genetics or molecular biology sit close to major research institutes like the Institute for Molecular Bioscience and the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, both based on the St Lucia campus, giving undergraduates a rare chance to see (and sometimes join) frontier research as an elective or vacation project.
Students choose one or two majors from a long list spanning the physical, life, earth, and mathematical sciences, and the flexibility to combine, say, ecology with data science, or physics with a second science major, is a genuine structural feature rather than marketing language. The degree's unit planner is built around combinability. A capstone science project or thesis in third year is common across most majors, giving students a taste of independent research before deciding whether to pursue honours.
