Master of Public Health

UQ's School of Public Health is one of the largest and most research-active in Australia, and the Master of Public Health draws on that scale to offer a genuinely wide set of specialisation streams, including epidemiology, health policy, global health, and environmental health, rather than the generic single-track MPH some smaller schools offer. A meaningful share of the cohort each year is international, often mid-career health professionals from across Asia and the Pacific, which shapes case discussions toward genuinely global health system comparisons rather than an Australia-only lens.

The program includes a substantial applied component: most students complete either a supervised field placement with a health organisation (government health departments, NGOs, or research units) or a research-based project, and UQ's public health research strength in areas like infectious disease modelling and Indigenous health gives some students access to genuinely active research groups for their placement or project supervision.

Because the degree can be tailored heavily through electives, two MPH graduates can come out with quite different skill profiles: one epidemiology and biostatistics-heavy, another policy and health systems-focused. That's a deliberate design feature for a workforce that includes clinicians, policy analysts, and program managers all under the one degree title.
