Doctor of Medicine (MD)

UQ's MD is one of the largest medical programs in Australia by enrolment, which comes with a genuinely unusual feature: a long-running dual accreditation partnership that lets a portion of the cohort complete significant clinical training at Ochsner Health in New Orleans, a legacy of UQ's original push into US-facing medical education in the early 2000s. Most students, though, train through Queensland's own network: Brisbane's major tertiary hospitals (Royal Brisbane and Women's, Princess Alexandra) plus an extensive regional and rural clinical school system stretching to Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, and further afield, reflecting Queensland's genuinely dispersed population and UQ's role in training doctors who will actually work outside the southeast corner.

The four-year graduate-entry MD (after a relevant bachelor's, GAMSAT, and interview) replaced the old MBBS structure, and its first eighteen months are organ-systems based with early clinical exposure through longitudinal GP placements, before students move into full hospital-based clinical rotations for the remainder of the degree.

Because so much of the clinical training happens in regional and rural settings, and because of the Ochsner option for eligible students, the actual training experience varies more between UQ MD students than at a program that keeps everyone in one metropolitan teaching hospital, something prospective applicants should factor in rather than assuming a single uniform experience.
