Bachelor of Agricultural Science

Agriculture at UQ runs primarily out of the Gatton campus, a genuine working farm and research station about an hour west of Brisbane rather than a token rural annex, and the Bachelor of Agricultural Science leans on that hard: students get direct access to livestock and cropping systems, UQ's own research farms, and industry connections into Queensland's cattle, grain, and horticulture sectors that are simply larger and more varied than what a metro-based agriculture program can offer.

The degree covers plant and animal production systems, agribusiness, and increasingly precision agriculture and sustainability units, reflecting real shifts in the industry toward data-driven farm management, and UQ's agricultural research strength (particularly in areas like plant breeding genetics and tropical agriculture, given Queensland's subtropical and tropical growing regions) feeds directly into elective and capstone project offerings.

Most students complete a substantial industry placement or work-integrated learning component, often with agribusiness employers, government agencies like the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, or research organisations, and Gatton's genuinely rural setting (compared to a program run entirely from a capital-city campus) means students graduate having actually worked with production systems rather than only studying them in theory.
