Master of Data Science

University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, QLD, Australia

About this program

The Master of Data Science runs on twelve core ICT and analytics units rather than a long menu of loosely related electives, which keeps the degree tight: statistics, machine learning, big data systems, and data visualisation are treated as the spine of the course rather than optional add-ons bolted onto a generic IT masters. Students coming in with an undergraduate background outside computing typically pick up a set of foundation units first to bring their programming and stats up to postgraduate speed before moving into the specialist content.

What distinguishes it from a lot of similarly-named degrees elsewhere is that it's taught by a university that has spent decades building distance-delivery infrastructure, so the heavily technical, lab-based components (model building, data pipeline work, visualisation projects) are designed from the ground up for students working through them off-campus, often while employed full-time. A capstone project lets students apply the full analytics pipeline to a real or realistic dataset, which is the piece employers tend to ask about at interview.

Graduates leave positioned for data analyst, data engineer, or junior data scientist roles, and the degree sits alongside UniSQ's Master of Information Technology and Master of Cyber Security as one of three postgraduate computing options the university actively cross-promotes to its own IT undergraduates.
