Bachelor of Education (Primary)
University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, QLD, Australia
About this program
Primary teaching at UniSQ is a four-year initial teacher education degree accredited against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, and it leads to registration as a primary school teacher on graduation. That's the standard shape for this qualification nationally, but UniSQ's version leans on its regional footprint for placement variety, with school partnerships across the Darling Downs, Ipswich, and wider southeast Queensland giving students a mix of regional and larger-town classroom experience rather than an exclusively metropolitan one.
Curriculum studies units cover the primary learning areas (literacy, numeracy, science, HASS, health and PE, the arts) alongside professional units in child development, inclusive education, and classroom management, with supervised professional experience placements building in length and responsibility each year, from observation-heavy early placements to a substantial final-year internship where students effectively run a classroom under a mentor teacher's supervision.
A sizeable share of the cohort studies externally, particularly students already working as teacher aides or in regional schools, and the degree is structured so placement blocks can be arranged around a student's existing location rather than requiring relocation to a university city.
