Doctor of Medicine

Sydney Medical School runs one of the older and more clinically distributed graduate-entry MD programs in the country. Students need a completed bachelor's degree plus the GAMSAT before applying, and the four-year MD moves quickly into clinical placements compared to some competitor programs, with clinical schools spread across Sydney's major teaching hospitals (Royal Prince Alfred, Westmead, Concord, Royal North Shore, Nepean) as well as a dedicated rural clinical school network based out of Dubbo and Orange that places a meaningful share of each cohort in regional NSW for extended blocks.

The MD structure blends case-based and problem-based learning in the early years with a strong emphasis on early clinical contact: students are in hospitals and general practices from year one rather than confined to lecture theatres. The later years are essentially a series of rotating clinical placements across the affiliated hospital network, meaning the actual clinical experience differs quite a bit depending on which teaching hospital or rural site a student is assigned to in a given term.

Sydney's rural clinical school placements run for extended periods (a full year in some cases) rather than short rotations, which the university markets as building genuine competence in rural and generalist medicine, a deliberate response to the persistent shortage of doctors willing to work outside major cities in Australia.
