About this program
Sydney's Bachelor of Science covers an unusually wide major list, and several of its life sciences majors benefit directly from the university's genuine research depth. The Charles Perkins Centre brings together researchers working on metabolic health, nutrition, and chronic disease, and undergraduates in relevant majors get exposure to that interdisciplinary research culture earlier than a purely departmental science degree would allow. Marine science and environmental biology students also have access to genuine field research infrastructure through the university's field stations, giving hands-on fieldwork experience rather than lab-only coursework for those majors.
Students choose one or two majors from options spanning the physical, life, and mathematical sciences, and the degree structure is designed around combinability: pairing, say, data science with biology, or chemistry with a second science major, is a normal and expected path rather than an edge case the timetabling struggles to accommodate. A capstone research or project unit in third year is common across most majors, giving students a genuine taste of independent research before deciding on honours.
Because Sydney's science faculty is large and covers so many disciplines, the actual day-to-day experience differs substantially by major. A physics student and a marine biology student are living quite different versions of "the science degree," which is worth knowing going in rather than assuming a single unified experience across all majors.

Admissions
Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent) with ATAR of approximately 85-92; background in mathematics and a science subject recommended.
