About this program

UTS built its Master of Information Technology around the idea that most people arriving in the program are switching lanes: economics grads, biomedical scientists, business analysts, people who did a humanities degree and then discovered they actually like writing code. The course leans into that with a foundation block before students pick a major, rather than assuming everyone already knows what internetworking or machine learning even mean.

The faculty (FEIT) has strong ties to the local tech and finance sector through Sydney's CBD-adjacent campus, and a good chunk of the major electives get taught by people still working part-time in industry: expect guest lectures from Atlassian or one of the big four consultancies rather than purely academic case studies. Majors on offer have included software architecture, business intelligence, information systems, games development, and internetworking, though not every major runs every session (internetworking wasn't offered in the Spring 2026 intake, for instance).

Graduates go on to roles like business intelligence analyst, IT security analyst, e-business developer, and software architect. The 96-credit-point structure means students without a technical background typically move through it slower initially, taking foundation-level programming and systems subjects before the major electives kick in, but it's designed to get a non-IT graduate to employable competence in under two years full-time.
