Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours)

The Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) is UWA's flagship program for its highest-achieving school leavers, and it isn't a philosophy degree despite the name. "Bachelor of Philosophy" here is used in the older, broader sense (as in Oxford's PPE-adjacent BPhil tradition) rather than referring to the discipline. Students design an individualised, interdisciplinary program across UWA's schools, take small specialist seminars capped well below normal first-year lecture sizes, and complete an honours-level research project earlier than students in a standard single-discipline degree would.

Entry is competitive and typically requires an ATAR near the top of the state's distribution, and the program functions as UWA's answer to the flagship honours colleges that several other Group of Eight universities run: a way of keeping high-achieving students who might otherwise look interstate or overseas, by offering genuine academic flexibility and research exposure from first year rather than making them wait until an honours year bolted onto the end of a conventional degree.

Graduates typically go on to competitive postgraduate study, research careers, or professional pathways in law, medicine or policy, carrying an honours-level research thesis completed years earlier than most of their undergraduate peers.
