Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences

University of Wollongong, Wollongong, NSW, Australia

About this program

This one is UOW's on-ramp into its own Graduate School of Medicine. Most students taking it are aiming at the Doctor of Medicine, and the course is built around that transition: a defined number of places carry a guaranteed pathway into the MD for students who hit the GPA and interview bar, rather than everyone having to sit GAMSAT cold. It sits in the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health and shares anatomy and physiology teaching space with the medical school next door.

First year is standard biomedical science: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, shared with other health science cohorts. From second year it narrows into pathophysiology, pharmacology, and population health, with an honours research year in fourth year that pairs students with active medical research groups, several connected to the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute on campus. Not everyone ends up in medicine; it's a legitimate finishing degree for people heading into health policy, medical research, or postgraduate allied health study, but the MD pathway is the reason most people enrol.
