Master of Computer Science

UOW's Master of Computer Science runs out of the School of Computing and Information Technology, based across the main Wollongong campus and the SMART Infrastructure Facility building on the eastern side of campus. It's built for people switching into computing from another background as much as CS graduates topping up their qualification: there's a foundation stream covering programming and data structures for anyone without a CS undergrad, then the degree proper moves into data management systems, network design, and software architecture. Wollongong's CS group has a long-standing research strength in wireless networking, and that shows up in elective options around network and system security.

Class sizes are smaller than at the Group of Eight campuses in Sydney, and a fair chunk of the cohort is international, drawn partly by post-study work rights and partly by regional-campus fee settings that undercut the big Sydney universities. The degree finishes with an individual capstone project, supervised one-on-one, which functions as a portfolio piece students bring to interviews with Illawarra-region and Sydney tech employers.
