About this program
UNSW's standalone economics degree, distinct from the Commerce degree's economics-adjacent majors, is more mathematically rigorous, aimed at students wanting genuine technical depth in econometrics and economic theory rather than a business-generalist qualification. The School of Economics has research strength in econometrics and behavioural and experimental economics, both of which show up as elective options by third year.
Graduates go into policy roles (Treasury, RBA, state government), banking and finance, and increasingly quantitative and data roles, and the degree's honours pathway (a genuine research year, competitive entry) is a well-worn route into economics PhD programs both in Australia and overseas.

4 terms of coursework
- Year 1: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Quantitative Methods, Statistics for Economics
- Year 2: Intermediate Micro and Macro, Econometrics 1, Economic History or Policy elective
- Year 3: Advanced Econometrics, specialisation electives (behavioural, labour, international, development economics)
- Honours (separate, competitive): research thesis plus advanced coursework
