This is where VU's biggest research reputation actually lives: the university's Institute for Health and Sport was ranked #6 in the world for sport science by ShanghaiRanking in 2025, and undergraduates in this course get taught out of the same $68 million exercise physiology, biomechanics and motor-learning facility at Footscray Park that the institute's 100-plus researchers and postgrad cohort use.
Students work through core units in exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning and skill acquisition before specialising toward strength and conditioning, clinical exercise or high-performance sport pathways, and the degree includes practical placement hours with sporting organisations. VU has longstanding research partnerships with elite clubs that occasionally translate into student placement opportunities, though those aren't guaranteed for everyone.
Compared to sport science programs that lean heavily on classroom theory, VU's course puts students in the lab early: first-year students are running basic physiological testing protocols rather than only reading about them, which is a deliberate consequence of the block model letting each subject go deep on one topic without competing for lab time against three other units.
