A three-year degree taught entirely in VU's block format, so students take one IT subject at a time for four weeks before moving to the next, rather than the usual four-subjects-at-once semester grind. VU has published its own research on this model and reports pass rates climbing from 77% to nearly 87% after it was introduced, which the university leans on heavily in how it markets the course to first-in-family students who might otherwise struggle with a traditional course load.

Students choose a major partway through (options typically include software development, cybersecurity, networking or data analytics), and the degree includes an industry-based learning placement in the final year, giving graduates workplace experience before they finish. VU's IT program has a large international cohort, and the block structure was partly designed with exactly that group in mind: intensive, single-subject study is easier to follow for students still building English academic fluency than four simultaneous subjects.

Graduates commonly go into junior developer, systems administrator or support analyst roles across Melbourne's west, an area VU has deliberately positioned itself to serve given its Footscray and Sunshine campus locations sit closer to industrial and logistics employers than the CBD-focused universities.
