UNSW Sydney and the University of Sydney are both Group of Eight universities in Sydney, close in selectivity and about AUD 2,000 a year apart in tuition. The table above has the current figures from our database. The real differences are the academic calendar, the subject strengths, and where each campus sits.

Ranking

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, UNSW is 19th in the world and the University of Sydney is 28th. Both are in the global top 30. That gap is small enough that it should not be the deciding factor between them.

Subject strengths

UNSW leans harder into engineering, the built environment, business, and actuarial studies than most of the Group of Eight, and several of its degrees have co-op or industry-placement tracks built in. The University of Sydney is the broader sandstone university, with particular strength in law, medicine, the arts and humanities, and architecture and design. For a specific course, look at the department rather than the overall ranking.

The academic calendar

This is the practical difference people underrate. UNSW runs three terms a year rather than two semesters, so the pace is faster, subjects are more compressed, and there are more entry points across the year. The University of Sydney runs a traditional two-semester year. If you prefer a slower pace and a long summer, that favours Sydney. If you want to finish sooner or start at a less common time, that favours UNSW.

Campus and location

UNSW's main campus is in Kensington, about 6 kilometres south-east of the city centre and close to the eastern beaches. The University of Sydney's Camperdown campus sits next to the city centre and Newtown. Both are well connected by public transport. Rent near either is at Sydney levels, which are the highest in the country.

Cost over a full degree

Tuition in the table is per year. Multiply by course length: three years for most bachelor degrees, one and a half to two for a coursework masters. Living costs are the same for both because both are in Sydney. The real cost of studying in Australia guide sets out the full budget.

Which to choose

Choose UNSW for engineering, business, actuarial studies, or built environment, if you want co-op placements, or if the faster three-term calendar suits you.

Choose the University of Sydney for law, medicine, humanities, or design, if you prefer a two-semester year, or if you want an inner-city campus.

For fields where both are strong, the choice comes down to the calendar, the campus, and the specific department, not the ranking.

Is UNSW better than the University of Sydney?

They are close. UNSW ranks slightly higher overall and is stronger in engineering, business, and actuarial studies. The University of Sydney is stronger in law, medicine, and the humanities. Neither is clearly better across the board, so the decision should turn on your course and the academic calendar.

Which is harder to get into?

Both are selective Group of Eight universities with similar institutional entry bars. Specific courses drive the difference: law and medicine at Sydney, and engineering, medicine, and actuarial studies at UNSW, all sit well above the general requirement.

Which is cheaper, UNSW or the University of Sydney?

They are close, within about AUD 2,000 a year on current figures. Both are in Sydney, so living costs are the same. Cost should not be the main factor between these two.

What is the difference between trimesters and semesters?

UNSW divides the year into three terms rather than two semesters. Subjects are more compressed, the workload each term is heavier, and there are more points in the year to start or finish. The University of Sydney keeps the standard two-semester year with a longer summer break.
