In the QS World University Rankings 2027, UNSW is 19th in the world and the University of Sydney is 28th. Both are in the global top 30. That gap is small enough that it should not be the deciding factor between them.

Subject strengths

UNSW leans harder into engineering, the built environment, business, and actuarial studies than most of the Group of Eight, and several of its degrees have co-op or industry-placement tracks built in. The University of Sydney is the broader sandstone university, with particular strength in law, medicine, the arts and humanities, and architecture and design. For a specific course, look at the department rather than the overall ranking.

The academic calendar

This is the practical difference people underrate. UNSW runs three terms a year rather than two semesters, so the pace is faster, subjects are more compressed, and there are more entry points across the year. The University of Sydney runs a traditional two-semester year. If you prefer a slower pace and a long summer, that favours Sydney. If you want to finish sooner or start at a less common time, that favours UNSW.

Campus and location

UNSW's main campus is in Kensington, about 6 kilometres south-east of the city centre and close to the eastern beaches. The University of Sydney's Camperdown campus sits next to the city centre and Newtown. Both are well connected by public transport. Cost over a full degree
