How much does an Australian student visa cost?

The student visa itself is only one line in the bill. This is what a subclass 500 actually costs to get, from the application charge to the health cover, medicals, and police checks you cannot skip.
The visa application charge
From 1 July 2026 the subclass 500 application charge is AUD 2,500 for the main applicant. It rose 25 percent that day, from AUD 2,000. You pay it in full when you lodge, and it is not refunded if the visa is refused.
A lower charge applies if you are an eligible citizen of a Pacific Island country, Timor-Leste, or an ASEAN member country, or if you apply in the ELICOS (English language) or non-award sector. The Department of Home Affairs Visa Pricing Estimator gives the exact figure for your situation.
Things that add to the charge:
- Each family member you include costs an extra application charge, with a higher amount for an adult than for a child. See bringing family on a student visa.
- An adult family member who cannot show functional English is billed a second, large instalment before the visa is granted, unless they provide evidence of English.
- Paying by card adds a surcharge, usually around one to two percent depending on the card type.
What that is in your own currency
The charge is set in Australian dollars, so your local cost depends on the exchange rate on the day you pay. As a rough guide only, AUD 2,500 has recently been in the region of 135,000 to 145,000 Indian rupees, or 210,000 to 225,000 Nepali rupees. The money you must show, but do not hand over
Separately from any fee, the visa requires evidence that you can cover 12 months of living costs, currently AUD 29,710 for a single applicant, plus your first year of tuition and travel. Where the cost goes up
- A longer course means more years of OSHC bought upfront.
- Bringing a partner or children adds an application charge each, more health cover, and possibly the second English instalment.
- A refusal means the AUD 2,500 is gone and a fresh application restarts the charges. A weak Genuine Student statement is the most common reason for refusal.
- Applying inside Australia to switch from another visa to a 500 can attract a subsequent temporary application charge on top.
