Master of Music

Australian Institute of Music, Sydney, NSW, Australia

About this program

AIM's Master of Music treats the degree less as coursework to complete and more as a vehicle for one significant, self-directed creative project: a festival, an album, a body of new compositions, a business plan for reaching new markets. Roughly half the program is built around delivering that project against milestones the student sets and refines with supervisors, with a further block of research subjects designed to sharpen and justify the creative direction rather than sit apart from it.

That project-first structure suits musicians already working professionally who want a credential and a structured runway to test an idea (a touring musician developing a new show, a producer building a label, a composer assembling a portfolio for film and screen work) more than someone coming straight from undergraduate study with no practice of their own yet.

AIM runs three intakes a year (trimesters, or "study periods" in AIM's own terminology) rather than the standard two-semester calendar, letting students start closer to when they're ready rather than waiting out a February or July cycle. Delivered from AIM's Surry Hills campus in Sydney, with faculty drawn from working composers, producers, and performers rather than purely academic staff.
