About this program
ANU's Bachelor of Science is a straightforward 144-unit degree structured around choosing a major from the College of Science and Medicine's list (anything from Chemistry to Genetics to Mathematics to Marine Science) with the flexibility to pair a science major with a minor from almost anywhere in the university. Unlike some Australian BSc degrees that lock students into a faculty from day one, ANU's version keeps first year broad enough that switching majors after a semester or two doesn't usually cost a student time.
The practical draw for a lot of applicants is proximity to national research infrastructure that sits literally on campus or a short walk away: CSIRO facilities, the Mount Stromlo Observatory (for astronomy-leaning students), and Geoscience Australia connections that feed into earth science majors. Students in laboratory-heavy majors get access to research groups earlier than at some larger universities, partly because ANU's science cohort per major is smaller.
Honours is the expected next step for anyone aiming at postgraduate research, and ANU treats the fourth year as a genuine research year rather than a formality: a thesis supervised one-on-one, often feeding into a group's ongoing project rather than being a standalone exercise.

- Year 2: Intermediate major courses, laboratory or fieldwork components, minor or elective courses
- Year 3: Advanced (3000-level) major courses, research methods course, capstone or project course in some majors
Optional Year 4: Honours
- original research thesis under individual supervision plus coursework, required for direct entry to a PhD
