About this program
Avondale's Associate Degree in Theological Studies (published on the live course finder under this name, sometimes listed as Associate Degree of Theological Studies) is a two year platform for studying theology, the Bible and church ministry, run out of Avondale Seminary on the Lake Macquarie campus. Students choose a combination of two disciplines from Biblical Studies, Theology and Church Ministry/Chaplaincy, and can undertake supervised field education, mentored in a local church, to gain practical ministry skills alongside the coursework. Units completed can be credited as advanced standing toward the Bachelor of Theology or the Bachelor of Ministry and Theology if a student decides to continue. Avondale is an institutional member of the Australia/New Zealand Association of Theological Studies (ANZATS) and the Australian and New Zealand Association of Theological Field Educators (ANZATFE).

1 term of coursework
- 16 units
- 96 credit points
- over four semesters full time or part time equivalent. Students complete 4 units from each of two disciplines chosen from Biblical Studies (unit prefixes BBOT, BBNT, BBBI, e.g. BBNT16110 Mark and Luke, BBNT26110 NT Greek 1A, BBOT26110 Hebrew Prophets)
- Church Ministry/Chaplaincy (CHMN, CHPL) or Theology (THEO)
- plus 8 further units selected from any undergraduate unit offered by the Seminary and approved by the Course Convenor. A minimum of 4 units must be at 200 level or above. Students are encouraged to follow the first two years of the Bachelor of Ministry and Theology unit schedule to keep the option of articulating into that degree later
Admissions
A selection rank (ATAR plus adjustment factors) of at least 63, or 24 points in the IB Diploma, or NZ Year 13 NCEA Level 3 university entrance, or an appropriate uniTEST/TOWA or STAT score, for school leavers; an Australian Certificate IV (or equivalent NZ certificate) for VET entrants; at least 2 completed Bachelor's units, a bridging/enabling course, or 3 completed units of Avondale's Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation for those who have already attended university; overseas secondary or higher education assessed under Avondale's Admission Policy (HE) Appendix 1. Applicants enrolling in a CHMN or CHPL coded unit must also agree to Avondale Seminary's Code of Professional Ethics and, where relevant, provide a pastoral recommendation, a National Police Check and a Working with Children Check.
