Course structure

1 term of coursework

  • PhD candidates design
  • plan and execute a supervised research project addressing a gap identified in their literature review
  • resulting in a written thesis
  • a combination of written exegesis and creative performance
  • or a thesis by publication
  • tracked against key milestones. Candidates enrol in DPHL71000 Doctor of Philosophy Thesis throughout candidature until thesis submission
  • then DPHL72000 Doctor of Philosophy Thesis
  • Under Examination. Standard candidature is 3 to 3.5 years full time (or part time equivalent)
  • with a maximum of 4 years full time (or part time equivalent)

Admissions

Completion of an Australian master's research degree, or an Australian bachelor's degree with First or Second Class Division A Honours including a minimum 25 percent research component, or an Australian master's coursework degree with a minimum overall GPA of 5.5 on a 7 point scale and a minimum 25 percent research component, or an Australian professional doctoral degree with a minimum 25 percent research component, or a comparable or higher overseas qualification. Applicants must submit certified academic transcripts, a detailed research proposal using Avondale's HDR Research Proposal template, a CV and two written academic references, and acceptance depends on alignment with one of Avondale's Research Centres and the availability of suitable supervisors.
