About this program
Deakin's Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a supervised research degree in which you make a substantial, original contribution to knowledge in your chosen field. You will work closely with a principal supervisor and one or more associate supervisors, expert academic staff who guide your research journey, while completing required research training coursework units. Deakin currently has around 1,600 higher degree by research candidates, supported by strong facilities, partnerships and strategic research centres. You will write a thesis of 80,000 to 100,000 words embodying the results of your research (creative arts candidates may instead submit a creative work with an accompanying exegesis of 25,000 to 50,000 words). The PhD is normally completed over three to four years of full-time study, or the part-time equivalent, and is offered across every faculty at Deakin, from Arts and Education to Business and Law, Science, Engineering and Built Environment, and Health.

Admissions
To be considered for selection into a Higher Degree by Research such as the PhD, you are required to have completed either a research project (including a thesis) equivalent to at least 25% of a year's full-time study at Level 8 or 9 of the Australian Qualifications Framework, with a grade equivalent to a Deakin grade of 70% or higher, or a masters degree (research) in a related area. Academic history, work and life experience, and individual circumstances are also considered.
