Master of Applied Linguistics

Monash University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia

About this program

Monash's Master of Applied Linguistics examines how language actually operates in global, multilingual and professional contexts, covering language acquisition and teaching, language planning and policy, and digital communication and language technology rather than treating linguistics as a purely theoretical discipline. Students can focus their electives on discourse analysis, digital language mapping or global language teaching, building genuine specialisation within the broader field, and practical projects throughout the course let students apply linguistic analysis directly to their own professional context. The course builds skills in language analysis, policy development and research methods that apply across education, government policy, corporate communication and technology roles where language genuinely matters, from multilingual customer service to natural language processing product development. It suits graduates aiming for careers in language education, language policy, translation-adjacent roles or language technology, and a PhD pathway exists for students who want to continue into linguistics research.
