About this program
Monash's Master of Biotechnology combines biotechnology science with entrepreneurship training, teaching students not just the science but how biomedical products actually move from laboratory research into commercial and clinical use. The first year covers contemporary biotechnology topics alongside the practicalities of securing research funding and navigating translation from lab to market, while the second year splits based on academic performance: students achieving at least a 70 percent average can choose a six-month industry placement in a pharmaceutical, medical device or life sciences organisation, or a supervised research project investigating human disease and potential therapeutic targets. Students who don't reach that threshold instead take a range of interdisciplinary biotechnology electives. It suits science graduates who want to combine technical biotechnology depth with genuine commercial and entrepreneurial skills, positioning them for roles that bridge research and industry rather than staying purely in the lab.
