About this program
Monash's Master of Geographical Information Science and Technology trains students in the principles and applications of GIS and geospatial technology, covering geographical information systems, remote sensing, global navigation satellite systems, spatial analysis and modelling, and decision support systems taught by specialists working at the leading edge of the field. Students learn to design and implement spatial data capture methods, build and manage spatial databases, integrate data from multiple sources, and manage GIS and remote sensing projects from start to finish, giving the course genuine technical depth rather than a surface-level introduction to mapping software. A supervised research option or industry-based internship rounds out the course, letting students choose between an academic or applied final experience. It suits graduates from geography, environmental science, engineering or computer science backgrounds moving into Australia's growing geospatial industry, spanning urban planning, environmental monitoring, defence, agriculture and infrastructure sectors.

- The course is structured in four parts. Part A. Foundation GIS and technology studies, Part B. Advanced GIS and technology studies, Part C. Extended studies and Part D. Advanced practice. Each part is 24 points. Part A. Foundation studies (24 points) You must complete: EAE4051 Fundamentals of geographical information science EAE4067 Remote sensing FIT9132 Introduction to databases and one of the following units: EAE2522 Earth Surface Dynamics FIT9136 Introduction to Python programming Note: EAE2522 is required for Stream 1 of Part C, while FIT9136 is required for Stream 2.
