About this program
This course is designed for professionals working in the minerals industry who require specialist knowledge in extractive metallurgy, as well as those preparing for further study such as a Masters or PhD in the field. Students learn about the extraction and refinement processes involved in comminution, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy, along with the economic and financial considerations affecting the mineral resource sector. The course covers the unit operations used in mineral processing and metallurgical process plants and the relevant properties of feed and product minerals, and includes practical laboratory work developing skills in mineral identification and analysis, information access, and communication, using industry-relevant mineral processing equipment. Metallurgical and minerals-processing roles often fall within the engineering-related occupations assessed for Australia's skilled migration program, typically requiring an Engineers Australia skills assessment. Admissions
Recognised Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7) or higher, or equivalent training, in a relevant area. Students with alternative satisfactory preparation may also be admitted. Students who do not have equivalent knowledge and background in chemistry, thermodynamics, physics and mathematics will be required to undertake additional preparatory units prior to admission.
