Bachelor of Film and Television (Honours)
Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, VIC, Australia
About this program
The defining feature of this degree is its two-part final capstone: Major Project: Production, followed by Major Project: Post-Production and Distribution, both built in consultation with industry partners rather than assessed purely as a student exercise. Splitting the capstone across production and post/distribution phases mirrors how an actual film project moves through a professional pipeline, and it means graduating students leave with a finished, distributable piece of work rather than just raw footage.
Swinburne's film program draws on Melbourne's screen industry base, and the honours structure (an extra fourth year layered onto what would otherwise be a three-year degree) gives students more time inside that production pipeline than a standard bachelor's would allow, plus a research component that pushes toward critical and theoretical engagement with the medium alongside the practical filmmaking.
Students typically specialise informally across the degree (directing, cinematography, editing, sound, producing) while still working across every stage of the pipeline in group productions, which is standard practice for film schools that want graduates who understand the whole set rather than just their own department.
