About this program
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a graduate research degree enabling candidates to make an original contribution to knowledge in divinity and its associated disciplines and to develop as independent researchers. Guided by a supervisory team, candidates submit a thesis of 80,000 to 100,000 words demonstrating a systematic and critical understanding of a complex field, with specialised research skills for the advancement of learning or professional practice. It is a Higher Degree by Research supervised across 12 University of Divinity member colleges, and applicants are admitted only through the School of Graduate Research Committee.

Course structure
- As a research higher degree the course has no taught unit schedule
- candidature involves satisfactory completion of confirmation of candidature, preparation and submission of a thesis (or equivalent) for examination, completion of an oral examination, compliance with Human Research Ethics Committee requirements, an annual progress report, at least 8 hours of annual research seminar or conference attendance, and presentation of at least one seminar or conference paper of 20 or more minutes between confirmation and thesis submission. Standard full-time duration is 3 years (minimum 2 years, up to 8 years part-time)
Admissions
Applicants must be admitted by the School of Graduate Research Committee, which weighs research potential, proposal feasibility, available supervision and referee reports alongside minimum eligibility. Requirements include completion of a Master's by research, Master's by coursework, Graduate Diploma or 4-year Honours undergraduate degree in divinity or an associated discipline with a 75% average; a thesis or equivalent of at least 12,000 words graded at or above 75%; a research proposal identifying a research question, methodology and statement of original contribution; and at least two consenting supervisors meeting the Higher Degree by Research Policy's requirements. Probationary admission is not available.
