About this program
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a graduate research degree enabling candidates to further develop skills in independent and sustained research, contributing to a field of knowledge in divinity or one of its associated disciplines. Candidates present research in a thesis of around 40,000 words, and the award serves as a pathway to admission into the Doctor of Philosophy. It is a Higher Degree by Research supervised across all 12 University of Divinity member colleges, and applicants are admitted only through the School of Graduate Research Committee.

Course structure
1 term of coursework
- As a research higher degree the course has no taught unit schedule
- candidature involves satisfactory completion of confirmation of candidature, preparation and submission of a thesis (or equivalent) for examination, completion of an oral examination, compliance with Human Research Ethics Committee requirements, an annual progress report, at least 8 hours of annual research seminar or conference attendance, and presentation of at least one seminar or conference paper of 20 or more minutes once candidature is confirmed. Standard full-time duration is 1.5 years (minimum 1 year, up to 4 years part-time)
Admissions
Applicants must be admitted by the School of Graduate Research Committee, which weighs research potential, proposal feasibility, available supervision and referee reports alongside minimum eligibility. Requirements include completion of a Master's by research, Master's by coursework, Graduate Diploma or 4-year Honours undergraduate degree in divinity or an associated discipline with a 75% average; a thesis or equivalent of at least 12,000 words graded at or above 70%; a research proposal identifying a research question, methodology and statement of contribution; and at least two consenting supervisors meeting the Higher Degree by Research Policy's requirements. Probationary admission is not available.
