About this program
The Doctor of Philosophy (Indigenous Knowledge) at the University of Melbourne is the first program in Australia to offer studies in Indigenous knowledge as an explicit, interdisciplinary subject area, recognising insights, innovations and practices Indigenous peoples have developed across generations. Candidates complete an innovative research project over 3.5 years full-time, choosing from four thesis formats ranging from an 80,000-word thesis to a 20,000-word thesis with a major folio of work.
The degree deepens engagement and reciprocal learning with Indigenous communities. Graduates go on to postdoctoral research and academic careers, competitive for research funding that benefits Indigenous communities.
