The Master of Philosophy (Science) at the University of Melbourne lets students entry into a research career without committing to a PhD, working with one of seven schools spanning agriculture, biosciences, chemistry, geography, mathematics, physics and veterinary science, and more than 500 academic researchers. Candidates complete a 30,000 to 40,000 word thesis over two years full-time, with regular progress reviews from a supervisory panel and no compulsory coursework.
Sections of the research thesis can be submitted for publication in scientific journals as they are completed, giving candidates a head start on an academic publication record.
