The Doctor of Philosophy (Research) by Prior Publication lets an established researcher with a substantial body of peer-reviewed publications gain a University of Newcastle doctorate that recognises that existing body of work, rather than requiring a new thesis written from scratch. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral qualification. Admission is decided by a dedicated Admissions Assessment Panel that reviews the applicant's prior publications, thesis proposal, and academic referee report, and hears an oral presentation of the work, before recommending admission to the Dean of Graduate Research.

Admissions
Applicants must not have previously been awarded a doctoral level qualification. Before the Admissions Assessment Panel process, the Head of School or Deputy Head of School confirms the applicant meets the program's standard admission and selection criteria, based on the applicant's academic and professional standing and the viability of their proposed thesis. Applicants submit a Thesis Proposal, listing the publications for inclusion, a statement of authorship, and a thematic overview, plus an Academic Referee Report from someone familiar with the quality and significance of their prior publications, then attend an oral presentation and verbal defence before the Panel.
