About this program

The Bachelor of Communications and Media prepares students for careers across journalism, advertising, and screen production. The degree gives a thorough grounding in writing, media law and digital communications before students move into a specialist area: Advertising (Sydney only), Film and Screen Production, or Journalism. It includes a robust internship program with placement opportunities at media organisations such as the ABC, SBS and commercial television networks, plus cultural and arts-related bodies across Australia. An Honours pathway is available.

Course structure

1 term of coursework

Students complete a minimum of 600 units of credit, including the required course Academic Writing, Research and Communication, two compulsory courses (Media and Society; Media Law and Ethics), 8 elective courses forming a Major (Advertising, Film and Screen Production, or Journalism), and 9 further elective courses that can form a second Major, a Minor, or a Specialisation from the broader Arts and Sciences list, including Applied Psychology, Archaeology, Behavioural Science, Business Studies, Counselling, History, Literature and Writing, Environmental Management, Marketing, Mathematics, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, Public Relations, Social Justice, Sociology, Theatre Studies and Theology (availability varies by Fremantle or Sydney campus). Every degree also includes the Core Curriculum: CORE I Foundations of Wisdom and a CORE II elective in philosophy and/or theology. Internship courses and work-integrated learning are available but not compulsory

Admissions

For the Fremantle (WA) intake, applicants with recent secondary education need an indicative ATAR/Selection Rank of 70 or an International Baccalaureate score of 25. Alternative pathways include successful completion of 4 subjects at undergraduate level or higher, completion of the Notre Dame Tertiary Pathway Program or an equivalent tertiary preparation program, an AQF Certificate IV or higher from an accredited VET provider, or direct entry via work and life experience (minimum age 20, at least two years of relevant work experience, and a Special Tertiary Admissions Test score of at least 135 in Multiple Choice and 140 in Written English).
