The Master of Arts (Research) is a thesis-based research degree for high-performing students seeking academic advancement, individually designed around the research methodology, thesis topic, and the candidate's background. It may be completed as a traditional thesis, a thesis by publication, or a non-traditional thesis (exegesis) with a creative artefact, and should make an original and substantial contribution to the humanities, social sciences, applied sciences, or Aboriginal studies.

Course structure
1 term of coursework
- This degree consists of supervised research
- candidates may also be required to undertake research training or further coursework as part of the program. Before applying, candidates must discuss their application with a suitably qualified academic staff member, preferably their intended principal research supervisor. While practicums are not compulsory, students completing a specialisation that requires one will undertake it in the capstone course. Domestic candidates may receive financial support through the Commonwealth Government's Research Training Scheme

Admissions
Applicants must hold an undergraduate (AQF Level 7) or Honours (AQF Level 8) degree from a recognised university, completed at a superior standard and demonstrating the potential to undertake research-based study at AQF Level 9 equivalence, or an equivalent academic or professional background considered appropriate by the Dean of the School for independent research work at Master's level.
