About this program

UQ's computer science research sits inside the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and the Master of Computer Science draws directly on ITEE's active groups in machine learning, computer vision, and data science rather than existing as a standalone teaching-only degree. Students in the AI-heavy specialisations regularly cross paths with PhD candidates and postdocs in shared labs, which is a genuinely different experience from a pure coursework master's.

The degree is designed as a professional entry qualification for computing, split into an extended (for students without a computing background) and standard pathway (for those with a relevant bachelor's), a structure UQ uses to funnel students from unrelated undergrad degrees, engineering, science, even arts, into software careers without demanding they redo an entire CS bachelor's. Specialisations include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and software engineering, and the capstone project unit typically pairs students with either an academic research group or, less often, an industry partner sourced through UQ's employability programs.

St Lucia's tech employer proximity is modest compared to Sydney or Melbourne, but Brisbane's tech sector (particularly in gov-tech and health-tech, given Queensland Health's large IT footprint) has grown enough that local placement and graduate hiring pipelines are reasonably active for students who don't want to relocate after finishing.
