Master of Philosophy (Architecture, creative arts, education, health, information technology, management and commerce, mathematical sciences, social and cultural studies)

University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, Australia

About this program

This Master of Philosophy listing groups several broad University of Queensland research fields, including architecture, creative arts, education, health, information technology, business and commerce, mathematical sciences, and social and cultural studies. In practice UQ runs one Master of Philosophy research degree and admits candidates by field and school rather than through separate program pages for each discipline group. An MPhil is a research only postgraduate degree in which a candidate works with an advisory team on an original research project, culminating in a 40,000 word thesis and an oral examination, typically over 1.5 to 2 years full-time. UQ enrols around 500 MPhil candidates a year, and many go on to convert into a PhD once their research is underway. Before applying, a prospective student needs to identify a research topic and a confirmed thesis supervisor within the relevant school, since admission is assessed against that specific proposal rather than a generic entry test.
