About this program
The Master of Strategic Communication at the University of Tasmania develops the professional skills, knowledge and tools to communicate across settings as diverse as the sciences, creative industries and politics. Students critically analyse media texts, practices, industries and audiences from theoretical perspectives, and design and produce a scholarly research project and media content that responds to a changing and dynamic media environment. This course may not be available to international students studying on campus in Australia; see the University's list of distance courses offered to international students. The course is not currently accepting new applications for 2026, though 2027 course information has since become available.

Course structure
1 term of coursework
- The Master of Strategic Communication requires completion of 200 credit points: 100 credit points of Core units, a 50 credit point specialisation, and a 50 credit point Research project. The Graduate Diploma in Strategic Communication articulates to the Master. Completing 50cp of study allows a student to exit with a Graduate Certificate in Strategic Communication (four transition units nested in the Masters)
- completing 100cp allows exit with a Graduate Diploma of Strategic Communication. Students who have completed a bachelor's degree with a credit average and a major in communication and media studies (Field of Education 1007) from the University of Tasmania or another approved institution are credited with 50cp of transition units, potentially completing the Masters in 18 months
- those with a cognate Bachelor Honours at credit average are also credited with the 50cp research/project, potentially completing the Masters in 12 months
Admissions
Entry into the Master's degree requires a Bachelor's degree with a credit average in any discipline, or work experience of at least three years in journalism, public relations, event management, and/or related professions. This course is not currently accepting applications for 2026, and specific fee information (including Commonwealth supported place availability) is unavailable while the course is closed to applications.
