About this program
The Master of Curatorial Studies in Fine Arts at the University of Western Australia is run in collaboration with UWA museums and various external Western Australian public galleries, providing students with direct experience in curatorial research and exhibition presentation. Students prepare either a fully researched proposal for a major exhibition and a publishable professional catalogue, or a substantial dissertation on an aspect of curatorial practice. Graduates work in curatorial, collections and exhibitions roles across museums and galleries.

Course structure
1 term of coursework
- Over a standard 2 year, 96 point enrolment, students complete a placement of at least one day a week for 36 weeks in a public gallery or comparable institution (MCur Placement), plus a comparative report of up to 5,000 words on that placement, and a component of Advanced Curatorial Studies. For the main research component, students present one of: an Exhibition Proposal of at least 5,000 words together with an Exhibition Catalogue essay of at least 25,000 words
- an MCur Dissertation of at least 30,000 words on an aspect of museology relevant to curatorial practice
- or a catalogue raisonne of up to 30,000 words on the works of an uncatalogued artist
Admissions
Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree of at least four years' full time study (or the part time equivalent) in a subject area the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts considers relevant to curatorial studies, or an equivalent qualification, and satisfy the Graduate Research School Board that they have the general ability to complete the course and the special ability to prepare and present a thesis.
