The Master of Music at the University of Western Australia extends existing skills in music, both as a professional-level degree and as a platform for doctoral study. Course structure

1 term of coursework

  • This is a 1 year, 48 point research masters offered in three fields: composition, musicology and performance. Composition students present a portfolio of composition(s) plus an 8,000 to 10,000 word thesis
  • musicology students present a 20,000 to 25,000 word thesis
  • performance students present a recital program of normally 60 to 80 minutes plus an 8,000 to 10,000 word thesis. All candidates must also demonstrate satisfactory attendance at and participation in the Conservatorium of Music's Research Seminar. The minimum enrolment period is 8 months full time (16 months part time). Students may apply to upgrade candidature to the Doctor of Musical Arts

Admissions

Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Music with honours or a Bachelor of Arts with honours from UWA, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Graduate Research School Board. Composition and musicology applicants must pass a portfolio review and interview; performance applicants must pass an audition and interview, arranged by the Head of the Conservatorium of Music.
